Irakli Garibashvili meets Ilham Aliyev in Baku

A meeting between Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, was held today at the Ganjlik Government Residence in Baku. The Head of Government is visiting Baku at the personal invitation of the President of Azerbaijan, to attend the SPECA Forum as Guest of Honor.

Focus at the meeting was made on the centuries-old good-neighborly, friendly relations between the two countries, and it was noted that Azerbaijan is one of the leading trade partners of Georgia. Matters pertaining to the strategic partnership between the countries in such areas as trade and economy, energy, transport, and logistics were discussed alongside important Georgia-Azerbaijan projects, including prospects of the development of the Middle Corridor, envisaging railroad modernization, port and highway expansion, construction and development, also the construction of the East-West speedway, and the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railroad project which, according to the Head of Government, will further strengthen the transport potential of the two countries. It was pointed out that, in the future, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railroad will become part of the Europe-Caucasus-Asia railroad corridor. Special attention was paid to the development and special importance of the Black Sea Submarine Cable, a large-scale project designed to supply the EU market with the green energy resources of the South Caucasus.

The parties reviewed global and regional security matters. The Head of Government expressed the hope that Azerbaijan will sign a peace treaty with Armenia shortly.
