Prime Minister of Georgia Meets the IMF Resident Representative Print Version

Irakli Garibashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia met Selim Cakir, Resident Representative of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) today.

Discussion was focused on the situation created in the country due to the global pandemic. The Head of Government of Georgia expressed his gratitude to the IMF official for the support demonstrated by the international financial institution (IFI) to the country in the pandemic response efforts. It was noted that vaccination has already been launched in the country and the economy started to recover, which is evidenced with Q1 data, thus leading to positive forecasts and projections of economic growth rate in 2021.

Attention was paid to the successful completion of a four-year Extended Fund Facility (EFF) of the IMF. In the opinion of the Prime Minister of Georgia, it was an utterly important program, which helped the economic team of the Government of Georgia in developing and implementing a strategy to overcome the crisis.

The Prime Minister of Georgia stated that irrespective of the pandemic, authorities of the country have carried out a number of significant reforms, including the pension indexation and automated VAT (value added tax) refund system, thereby noting that active work will be pursued further.

A ten-year plan of development has been discussed at the meeting too. It is being developed with an initiative of Irakli Garibashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia, who highlighted the importance of actively engaging the IMF and development partners in the implementation of the plan.
