Giorgi Gakharia, Prime Minister of Georgia met Marek Szczygiel, New Head of the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) Georgia.

Parties at the introductory meeting spoke about the role of the EUMM in ensuring regional security, stability and peace as the only international monitoring mechanism present on the ground.

Focus was made on the grave violations witnessed in the occupied territories of Georgia, along with the humanitarian and human rights issues observed along the occupation line. Recent cases of the unlawful detention of the citizens of Georgia were also discussed at the meeting.

The necessity of the resumption of meetings and effective use of the Geneva International Discussions (GID) as well as of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism in Gali and Ergneti has been underlined. Unwavering will of the Government of Georgia towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict has been reiterated at the meeting.

Also, special attention was paid to the need and importance of opening the so-called cross points.

Ambassador Szczygiel congratulated the Prime Minister of Georgia on the country's successful fight against COVID-19 and noted that the work of the Richard Lugar Center for Public Health Research in this respect has been noted and recognized also by the EU Member States.

The meeting held at the Government Administration of Georgia was attended by Kakhaber Kemoklidze, Chief of Staff at the National Security Council of Georgia.
