Fight against violence towards women will become more comprehensive. Giorgi Gakharia, Prime Minister of Georgia has held an ad-hoc meeting with representatives of relevant institutions on the tragic cases of femicide witnessed in the past two months.

It was noted at the meeting that law has become tighter a number of times in the recent years and crimes committed on gender grounds are regarded as a weighty factor. Also, systems have been institutionalized for the monitoring, risk assessment and execution of restriction orders towards offenders; investigators are regularly trained, though coordinated action of all institutions is required in the current situation.

Focus at the meeting was made on current challenges witnessed in the execution of the existing legislation.

As noted by the Head of Government of Georgia, violence towards women requires a joint response with a comprehensive approach. "Eight women have been killed within the past two months by their family members and this is devastating. It is a problem that requires a comprehensive response and every relevant institution of the country will bear a significant role in this process. We should take more active steps to fight against this problem" noted the Prime Minister of Georgia.

As instructed by the Head of Government of Georgia, a wide-scale campaign will be launched against violence towards women, which will engage Ministries of Internal Affairs, Justice, Regional Development, Health and Education, along with a General Prosecution Service and Government Administration of Georgia.
