The closing of the so-called checkpoint in occupied Akhalgori and the events in the village of Chorchana, Khashuri Municipality were discussed during today's meeting between Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia and Toivo Klaar, Co-Chair of the Geneva International Discussions and EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia. The meeting was held at the Administration of the Government.

Decisions like the one on closing the so-called checkpoint, the Head of Government emphasized, further deteriorate the humanitarian situation and undermine security on the ground.
Special emphasis during the conversation was placed on the developments surrounding the standard police checkpoint recently opened in the village of Chorchana, a territory controlled by Georgia's central authorities; and on the recent destructive actions of the de facto authorities of the occupied Tskhinvali region.

During the conversation, the Prime Minister singled out that the Co-Chairs of the Geneva Talks should discuss this issue in high-rank diplomatic formats, and that the capitals of the EU member states must be duly updated on this issue.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister and the EU Special Representative also underlined the importance of deescalating the situation, and pointed out the need to use to this end platforms like meetings for incident prevention and response mechanisms alongside the Geneva International Discussions.

The Prime Minister thanked Toivo Klaar for the European Union's active engagement in the process of peaceful conflict-resolution, and underscored the critically important role of the EUMM in the process of probing into the situation in the territories adjacent to the occupation line.
