Prime Minister and International Expert Jeremy Sarkin Discuss Empowering Human Rights Council Print Version

The Empowerment of the Human Rights Council and the human rights challenges facing Georgia were discussed during today's meeting between Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze and international expert Jeremy Sarkin, at the Administration of the Government.

The meeting emphasized the importance of the institutionalization of national mechanisms for protecting human rights.

According to the Prime Minister, the Government supports any reform promoting the adoption of higher human rights standards.

Georgia's exceptional regional role in terms of respect for human rights was singled out.

The Head of Government welcomed Jeremy Sarkin's recommendations designed to assist the Human Rights Council in better fulfilling its duties.

On January 31, Jeremy Sarkin will present his final report supported by the joint EU-UNDP project Human Rights for All initiated by the Human Rights Secretariat.

The meeting with the Prime Minister was attended by Head of the Human Rights Secretariat of the Administration of the Government of Georgia Natalia Jaliashvili, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Louisa Vinton, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Tuya Altangerel, and UNDP Democratic Governance Team Leader Gigi Bregadze.
