"Drama Theatre of Batumi is acquiring new life and I wish to congratulate all residents of Batumi and entire Georgia with this milestone" stated Mamuka Bakhtadze, Prime Minister of Georgia when addressing the audience gathered at the launch of the restored building of Ilya Chavchavadze Professional State Drama Theatre in Batumi today.

Head of Government expressed his gratitude to Cartu Foundation for restoring the theatre building and noted that Drama Theatre of Batumi has always played an outstanding role in the history of Georgian drama theatre performances.

"It is indeed a special case. I wish to particularly congratulate the troupe working here with this event. Directors and actors of every generation are the addressees of my well-wishing, of course with our loyal theatre-goers. Building has been restored so that every historic detail and unique wall paintings, exceptional chandeliers and colonnades have been preserved. It was all done by Cartu Foundation. I wish to enormously thank Bidzina Ivanishvili - great supporter of Georgian theatre art and Georgian culture at large - for this endeavor. History of Batumi Drama Theatre dates back to 70's of the 19th century. It has always been standing out with its unique signature and it is very important to continue with this tradition. Restored building of Batumi Drama Theatre will enable us to promote and show-case the Georgian art potential with its full might. I am overwhelmed with happiness as along with you, other world-class troupes will also be able to take part in the cultural life of the city. It once again underlines the status of Batumi as a city of art festivals. Supporters of Georgian theatre art and culture, please once again accept my heartfelt congratulations with this milestone" concluded the Prime minister of Georgia.

Cartu Foundation has spent 14.5 MLN GEL on the rehabilitation of Ilya Chavchavadze Professional State Drama Theatre building in Batumi.

Apart from the restoration of the facility, state-of-the-art lighting and sound amplification systems have been installed at the theatre, along with new stage mechanisms and modern technologies, which will enable the troupe to indulge into most sophisticated experiments and host the world-class theater performers. Large and small halls of the theatre will be able to have concurrent performances.

Theatre seats 480 people and is equipped with disability access.
