"Back in 1921 Georgia had its Constitution endorsed with the highest democratic standards and it may be said without any exaggeration that Constitution of Georgia was regarded as one of the most advanced ones in Europe back in those days" stated Mamuka Bakhtadze, Prime Minister of Georgia when addressing the audience gathered at the event dedicated to the Day of Constitution of Georgia held at the Parliament of Georgia today.

Head of the Government of Georgia noted that day when our Constitution was endorsed is one of the most important milestones in the modern history of Georgia and he congratulated it to every citizen and friend of Georgia.

According to the Prime Minister of Georgia, new Constitution was endorsed on August 24, 1995 on the grounds of the original one voted for in 1921 and this principal document - preeminent law of the country - predominantly defines "issues of principal importance for the democratic development of Georgia - what kind of state we build and what should be its future".

In the opinion of the Prime Minister of Georgia, our state is at a substantially new stage of development and its needs are fully met by the new edition of the Constitution. It should serve as a basis for a stable, democratic development of Georgia.

"Constitution should gain an appropriate place and acquire importance, which should be assigned to the main document that unites the country. Constitutional process clearly depicted how important is the preeminent law of the country, how is the society engaged in it and what interest has been caused by each provision of the Constitution among our citizens. Prior to the endorsement of the new edition of the Constitution, public disclosure meetings were often filled with radically different positions, which evidences that society feels a greater responsibility towards issues of sovereign importance. It is gratifying that a compromise has been found irrespective of different opinions and we have reached an agreement on key principles as everyone is united around one goal - to build a united, democratic and strong Georgian state" concluded the Prime Minister of Georgia.

According to the Head of the Government of Georgia, country now has a Constitution that ensures stability and pluralism in the conditions of a high democracy on the one hand and excludes excessive concentration of power and risk of autocracy on the other hand.

"It was our team that made steps towards increasing the role of Parliament, thereby and ultimately shaping Georgia into a Parliamentary Republic of a European type. It is gratifying that Venice Commission praised the final edition of the Constitution, which implies that our young democracy has successfully performed in the constitutional process. I wish to use this opportunity and express my heartfelt gratitude to every person engaged in this process. At the same time, please bear in mind that on the Day of Constitution of Georgia it is still not enforced on the entire territory of our homeland and it is our main issue and solidifier today. I hope that in not so far away future our Constitution will be enforced throughout the united Georgian territory and it will serve as a guarantee for democratic values and protection of each and every citizen of Georgia" stated the Prime Minister of Georgia.

First issue of the new edition of the Constitution of Georgia was presented at Shota Rustaveli Hall of the Parliament of Georgia in connection with the Day of Constitution of Georgia. Event was attended by Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, Patriarch of All Georgians Ilya II, members of the Government of Georgia, Mayor of Tbilisi, officials of the legislative and executive authorities of Georgia, judges of the Constitutional Court of Georgia, Secretary of the Supreme Council of Justice, Chief Prosecutor and representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGO).
