"Our citizens suffering of diabetes may purchase medication at reduced prices from today" stated Mamuka Bakhtadze, Prime Minister of Georgia at the press briefing held prior to the Executive Government Meeting today.

As noted by the Head of the Government of Georgia, this fact actually marks the launch of a new phase of the Extension Program for the Provision of Medication to Individuals Suffering of Chronic Diseases. The program aims to increase the affordability of most frequently used medication by the socially vulnerable groups of population to reduce their out-of-pocket payments.

"I noted at multiple occasions that Poverty Eradication Program includes a key component to reduce the medical expenses of our citizens. A number of studies evidence that one of the most pressing recurrent expenditures of our population is actually the out-of-pocket payments for medication. Hence, we have designed a number of new initiatives. One of them has been enforced since August 13, 2018 to significantly reduce the prices on medication to treat Type 2 Diabetes. Discounted prices apply to any and all people. From today onwards, individuals suffering of diabetes will benefit from the significantly reduced prices on medication" stated the Prime Minister of Georgia.

Program for the Provision of Medication was launched last May. It originally applied only to the socially vulnerable groups of population. Next phase of the program will be enforced in autumn this year to apply to the elderly and the disabled, who will benefit of medication at a much cheaper cost.

"Most wide-spread medication will be made available in the first phase of the initiative and will cover the cardio-vascular diseases. Program will be extended further to cover other chronic diseases, which is perceived to be the greatest burden in terms of treatment by many" concluded the Prime Minister of Georgia.
