Georgia Becoming Tobacco Control Leader in the Region Print Version

2018-05-03

As you know, the Law on Tobacco Control came into force in Georgia on May 1, positioning Georgia as the region's leader in this area.
While the tobacco-related deaths in the world make up 10%, this indicator in Georgia is as high as 22%, which is disastrous. This is why I urge and appeal to our citizens to accept this law with understanding. We must protect our citizens, especially children, from tobacco smoke.

It is empirical knowledge worldwide that the enactment of a law of this kind drastically cuts tobacco use. This is why I urge you to accept this law with understanding, especially businesses to whom it applies. Of course, I urge the Interior Ministry to ensure effective supervision and control over the enforcement of this law. However, as the recent statement by the Interior Ministry reads, citizens' understanding of this problem and cooperation is extremely important for its effectiveness.
