Members of the Council of Europe Commend Georgia’s Success in Consolidating Democracy Print Version

Georgia's progress in consolidating democracy, the four-point reform agenda, and the situation in the country's occupied territories were the key topics discussed during today's meeting between Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili and the Rapporteur Group on Democracy of the Council of Europe.
The members of the Rapporteur Group on Democracy commended the country's democratic processes as successful. The Prime Minister pointed out the support of he Council of Europe member states in achieving this success.
The productive cooperation between the Council of Europe and Georgia was emphasized and commitment was expressed to further strengthening the close bilateral relations.
As it was said during the meeting, in May 2019 Georgia will assume Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, which is very important.
During the meeting with the members of the delegation, Giorgi Kvirikashvili paid special attention to the grievous human rights and humanitarian situation in Georgia's occupied regions.
According to the Head of Government, Russia continues its illegal actions toward the actual annexation of the Regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali, which must be duly assessed by the international community.
The members of the delegation reaffirmed their firm support of Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty.
The Rapporteur Group on Democracy, which consists of permanent representatives of the member states of the Council of Europe and Head of the Council of Europe Tbilisi Office Cristian Urse, is led by Lithuanian Laima Jurevičienė.
The visit seeks to assess the implementation of the Action Plan of the Council of Europe and to attract financing for projects under said action plan.
The meeting at the Administration of the Government was attended by Georgia's Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe Irakli Giviashvili and Deputy Foreign Minister Vakhtang Makharoblishvili.
