It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl.
Helmut Kohl played an instrumental role in the reunification of Germany, a global event of historic importance, and he contributed tremendously to Europe's political and economic integration and to the fight for peace.
The Georgian people will never forget Helmut Kohl's solidarity and immense support in a most difficult period for Georgia. After regaining our independence, he helped us take the first steps closer to Europe.
I offer my sincere sympathies to the family of Helmut Kohl and to the German people over this great loss.
