PRIME MINISTER ORDERS HARSH MEASURES FOR COST CUTS RELATING TO CHILDREN Print Version

2016-12-09

"If anyone misinterpreted administrative cost cuts as reduced nutrition for children at kindergartens, they must be making decisions equal to transgressions" noted H.E. Giorgi Kvirikashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia in response to the recent spread of information on removing a vital nutrient from the daily intake of food served to children at a chain of kindergartens in Telavi.

Head of the Government of Georgia explained that information has not been verified, though instructed the Ministers of Health and Education to scrutinize the issue.

"I need to state with absolute seriousness that if this is true, I do not know which public servant came to this idea or decision, but if exists, I do not wish to see him in the capacity, within which this decision has been taken. If anyone misinterpreted administrative cost cuts as reduced nutrition for children at kindergartens, they must be making decisions equal to transgressions" noted H.E. Giorgi Kvirikashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia.

In the opinion of the Head of the Government of Georgia, there are plenty of other cost cut opportunities.

"I do not wish to list. It is not necessary, but attendance of irrelevant conferences by large delegations from Ministries is among these options and there are cases of this around us. There are many other expenses that might be painlessly reduced and even without proportionate reduction of staff by 10 percent. Of course, in some cases we will have to optimize the size of public institutions, if reforms require function-wise, if this is the only option. However, let me say once again that if anyone decides to cut the nutrition intake of children, their superiors should take harsh measures as such decisions are absolutely intolerable. There is clearly no need. We have sufficient resources to fund the increased needs of our development, stemming from our ambitious plans of advancement, but by no means on the expense of reduced nutrition intake of children. This information may not be accurate, but as it was broadcasted, I am obliged to make a public announcement on this topic" added the Prime Minister of Georgia.
