Construction of a 230 MW Gardabani combined cycle thermal power plant has launched, - the Prime Minister of Georgia participated in the laying of the foundation stone for the new "Gardabani Thermal Power Plant 2".

Giorgi Kvirikashvili considered "Gardabani Thermal Power Plant 2" to be yet another important step on the path of reinforcing energy security of Georgia.

According to the Prime Minister, implementation of similar projects shall be prioritized, since the local generation facilities cannot meet the increasing demand during the wintertime. Giorgi Kvirikashvili indicated that construction of energy effective combined cycle thermal power plants with the utilization of the modern technologies is very important for the energy system of Georgia, since many more facilities with guaranteed performances shall be built in the future.

"I am very glad that the largest Chinese company - China Tianchen Engineering Corporation participates in the implementation of this project. This represents yet another sign of the growth of Georgian-Chinese economic and investment relations. This is a direct outcome of the very important agreements that have been concluded lately, including the Cooperation Memorandum on Development of the New Silk Road Concept and a consensus on concluding the free trade agreement with China. The thermal power plant will be constructed in winter of 2020. This is yet another energy source for our system and one more step on the path of ensuring our country's energy security,"- the Prime Minister noted.

Giorgi Kvirikashvili thanked everyone who participated in drafting the project and commended on the transparent and competitive process that led to the establishing of relations with Chinese company.
"Gardabani Therman Power Plant 2" project is administered by one of the leading companies in the field of large-scale energy projects, including construction of combined cycle energy generation facilities, China Tianchen Engineering Corporation. The 159 million USD worth project is funded by Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation. The new energy effective combined cycle thermal power plant will become operative by winter 2020.
