Government of Georgia – Appearance 2016

STATEMENT OF H.E. GIORGI KVIRIKASHVILI, PRIME MINISTER OF GEORGIA ON CONSTITUTIONAL MAJORITY IN THE NEW PARLIAMENT OF GEORGIA Print Version

2016-10-19

"We need constitutional majority in the Parliament primarily to deliver our pre-election promises to the electorate and to finalize the implementation of a very dynamic and ambitious development plan that we initiated so actively" stated H.E. Giorgi Kvirikashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia at the Executive Government Meeting this morning.

He also noted that country witnessed a precedent in the past, when the Constitution of Georgia was tailored to the needs of one individual and one political movement. It led to the abuse of power. In the opinion of the Head of Government, speculations related to the attainment of constitutional majority by Georgian Dream are merely unhealthy and simulated.

"Claims on Georgian Dream winning the general elections with a constitutional majority are absolutely unhealthy speculations and most artificial" added the Prime Minister of Georgia.

In his opinion, constitutional majority is primarily a huge responsibility assumed by the governing team towards every single voter of the country, while the implementation of an ambitious plan of the national development is its main aim and goal.

"It constitutes to the creation of an unprecedentedly high dynamics of economic development in the coming four years, so that Georgia makes a very significant breakthrough in the development of economic, social and democratic institutions. We should pursue the most vigorous reforms that we have launched within the scope of European and Euro-Atlantic Agenda" stated the Prime Minister of Georgia.

According to him, authorities have inherited a very unhinged Constitution and a team needs to be convened to make amendments to it with a wide engagement of every member of the society so that nobody ever gets allowed to abuse the power. Once and for all, it should become the Constitution of a European and democratic Georgia.

Nevertheless, Prime Minister of the country clearly stated that country may not rush with amendments to the Constitution.

"We will not put this issue high on our agenda in the new Parliament. By no means! Hurry will not serve us well! Our main goal is to create a momentum and very high dynamics for irreversible economic, social and democratic development. This is what we pledge to our electorate and we will deliver on every promise made in our pre-election campaign. Constitutional majority, which we will hopefully get as a result of the second round of voting is merely of secondary importance and will be solely used for delivering every single promise we made to our citizens, if they demonstrate their kind will to this. I wish to call for active voting on October 30, 2016. We need to be active again in the second round of voting to participate in decision-making on the future of our country" stated the Prime Minister of Georgia.
