Tripartite Meeting in the framework of Batumi Ministerial Print Version

Development of green economy in the pan-European region, air quality improvement for the purpose of amelioration of the environment and human health, and education for sustainable development, - these were main themes discussed at a high-level tripartite meeting of the Prime Minister of Georgia and the representatives of the United Nations Economic Commission (UNECE) and the United Nations. The special emphasis was put on the improvement of air quality and it was noted that a healthy environment is one of the prerequisites for wellbeing. The Prime Minister noted that, relevant policies are being developed and implemented to improve air quality in Georgia, and effective mechanisms as well as new regulations are elaborated.

The sides also underlined the vital importance of education in terms of ensuring sustainable development. Participants of the meeting it is highly desirable to increase awareness on the need for sustainable development and implement rules that will be consistent with environmental protection. At the meeting the importance of international cooperation in the process of coping with the environmental challenges was also discussed.

Trilateral meeting was attended by Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Gigla Agulashvili, Executive Secretary of UNECE Christian Friis Bach, Director of the UNECE Environment Division Marco Keiner, Deputy Director of the UNECE Environment Division Sergiusz Ludwiczak, Head of the Environmental Department Jean Rodriguez; acting director of the Department for international politics, global and regional challenges on environmental issues of European Commission's Directorate General Nicholas Henley, the head of the Department on integration policy and environmental impact assessment of the European Commission's Directorate General for George-Stavros Kremlis.
