Government of Georgia – Appearance 2016

Statement by the Prime Minister Print Version

2016-05-27

I am observing the ongoing investigation into the case very closely, - Prime Minister commented on the Kortskheli polling station incident once again and assessed it as an outrageous fact. Giorgi Kvirikashvili considers that the supporters of the ruling party have a higher obligation of forbearance and encouraged them to refrain from engaging in controversies.

"This is an absolutely deplorable and regretful fact. Investigation into the case has already been launched. Above all, I would like to assure our supporters that this is not our style. We do not intend to hold elections in such a manner. We aim at ensuring violence-free polling stations where citizens will have an opportunity to express their will by voting in a free environment, unimpeded by confrontations and conflicts of such type. This is absolutely necessary in terms of building our statehood, and I would like to tell our supporters that authorities are under the highest obligation of forbearance. Citizens who do not represent the government but support the ruling party are under the similar obligation. Their obligation of forbearance is much higher than of those who support other political forces. In many cases the latter may even act provocatively," - the Prime Minister noted prior to the Cabinet Session.
The Prime Minister also pointed out preventive measures and instructed law enforcement bodies to increase their mobilization.

"Correct response is essential for preventive purposes. I urge the law enforcers to pay closer attention to violent acts of such nature and ensure the fullest mobilization in the future during the elections. Preventive measures are crucial to avoiding repetition of similar incidents. Law enforcers must act adequately. This is vitally important! I also instructed the Ministry of Justice to propose legislative amendments for the purpose of ensuring tougher response and sanctions against such violent acts. We will start the government meeting by discussing said legislative initiative," - Giorgi Kvirikashvili noted.
