New-Generation Internet and Technology (5G) In Georgia

2021-01-14

Georgia and the US have signed a memorandum on the development of a new technology, namely 5G wireless communications networks. The memorandum reads that 5G will enable a vast array of new applications, including the provision of critical services to the public, which will benefit the citizens and economies of the two countries.

Developing 5G internet is a new opportunity for the country. As a new-generation technology, it provides the fastest possible communication and connectivity. Introducing this new technology will boost and advance to a bran new level services in such important sectors as healthcare, education, business, agriculture, and others. The new technology allows for upgrading the field of services and ushering in new services to simplify people's lives.

One of the key directions to be developed by the new-generation internet is healthcare. Infrastructure building on the innovative technology allows for adopting new medical services.

The new technology is also vital for the system of education, which faces serious challenges due to the pandemic. The innovative technology allows for enhancing the effectiveness of remote learning.
The 5G technology is actively used in agriculture as well in that it sets the stage for autonomously operating horticultural machinery, such as using video sensors for soil inspection, to identify areas where fertilizers and pesticides are needed.

The new technology enables countries to transition to electronic systems of public services and simplify access to servers.

Introduction of the new technology is one of the strategic directions under Georgia's 2020-2025 National Strategy for the Development of Broadband Networks and Action Plan for Its Implementation. The adoption of new-generation technologies is planned in at least three municipalities.

By signing the Memorandum on Securing 5G Networks with the US, Georgia joins the Clean Network initiative safeguarding the use of safe 5G network devices and software from manufacturers, also protecting citizens' privacy, telecommunications infrastructure from aggressive intrusions by malign actors, and safeguarding national security.

The Georgia-US memorandum emphasizes the need to support providers of reliable and safe network devices and software in the 5G market. According to the document, assessing providers in the market will rely on such criteria as rule of law, safe environment, ethical practices, compliance with security standards and best industrial practices. The US and Georgia will cooperate in both bilateral and multilateral formats toward the development of innovations.
