Statement by Government Administration Print Version

2022-03-29

Today, one of the media outlets, citing the President's Administration as a source, disseminated information claiming that the President, over the past year, has signed and approved the appointment of all candidates endorsed for diplomatic missions and international organizations.

Unfortunately, this information does not reflect the actual state of affairs. We would like to reiterate that the President, over a recent period, has repeatedly rejected or left unanswered issues related to candidates proposed by the Government of Georgia as ambassadors/heads of mission.

In addition, we would like to point out that the Constitution of Georgia vests the Government with the exclusive right to conduct foreign policy, including appointment of ambassadors and permanent mission representatives. It is critically important that ambassadors be assigned to Georgia's diplomatic missions abroad in a timely manner, so that the principle of continuity may be observed-an issue which, unfortunately, is problematic in light of said challenge and calls for timely resolution. Given that this issue remains relevant even today, and creates obstacles for the operations of diplomatic representatives, the Government of Georgia will take steps in line with declared legal response.
