Sopo Japaridze attended the 1st Congress of Ukrainian Women in Kie Print Version

On November 22-23, 2017, the Prime Minister's Assistant on Human Rights and Gender Equality Sopo Japaridze attended the 1st Congress of Ukrainian Women in Kiev.

The Ukrainian Women's Congress was held at the initiative of the Equal Opportunities Inter-Faction Union and through joint cooperation between the National Democratic Institute (NDI), the Council of Europe, UN agencies, and other organizations.

The main goal of the event was to create a unified platform bringing together governmental representatives and the private and civil sectors to discuss women's rights.

The congress' sessions covered issues pertaining to greater women participation, women's economic empowerment, elimination of gender-based crimes, and combating gender stereotypes, also Women, Peace and Security, and other topics.

Sopo Japaridze delivered a speech at the session titled "We are tired of being silent! Preventing and countering gender based violence against women," in which she spoke about Georgia's ratification of the Istanbul Convention, legislative amendments made to ensure compatibility of local legislation with the Istanbul Convention, and the Interagency Commission on Gender Equality and Violence against Women and Children, which was recently established under the executive branch.

Notably, representatives of the executive and legislative branches of Ukraine and other countries, international organizations, local governments, and the civil sector participated in the event.
