We are taking every step necessary to ensure free and transparent elections in line with international standards, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili stated during today's meeting with representatives of the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Republican Institute (IRI).

Since 2012, the authorities have held six elections praised by the international community as free and democratic, the Prime Minister said, adding that the Government of Georgia appreciates the interest and support of partners and their engagement in the further consolidation of Georgia's democratic institutions.

The Head of Government thanked the NDI and IRI representatives for delegating, despite the ongoing pandemic, observers to the upcoming local self-government elections, emphasizing their input into further bettering Georgia's electoral system as invaluable.

According to the Prime Minister, similar to last year, the authorities will ensure COVID-safe elections in line with the Health Ministry's regulations.

The meeting underlined the immense importance of the upcoming local self-government elections for Georgia's democratic development and progress on the path to European and Euro-Atlantic integration, pointing out that the authorities are taking every step to ensure a level playing field to ensure against any question marks or political speculations.

The Head of Government singled out the bipartisan support enjoyed by Georgia from its strategic partner, the US, and stated that Georgia, in close cooperation with American and European partners, is taking far-reaching steps toward stronger democratic institutions and a more pluralistic and inclusive political environment.

The meeting at the Administration of the Government was attended by NDI representatives: Acting Vice President Nicole Rowsell; Senior Peace, Conflict, and Security Advisor Lauren Van Metre; Director for Election Programs Patrick Merloe, and Country Director for Georgia Alan Gillam; and IRI representatives: Vic President Scott Mastic; Program Director for Eurasia Stephen Nix, and Country Director for Georgia John DiPirro, while the Georgian side was represented by Head of the Government's Administration Ilia Darchiashvili.
