The Government has spent 37 million GEL to build a new, modern-standard residential complex for IDPs, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili stated in Tskaltubo today where 420 refugee families were given keys to new apartments.

According to the Head of Government, these IDPs previously lived in dire living conditions across 15 sanatoria.

"In 2020, we provided more than 100 families with apartments, and now we are about to do the same for 420 more households. Since October 1, 2012, we have provided and legalized living spaces, apartments, for 27,000 refugee families, our cherished citizens, refugees. We all remember the dire conditions in which they were forced to live. Of course, it was one of the major challenges facing the Government, and the Government has proved up to this task by providing IDPs, temporary refugees, with decent living quarters. On one hand, I congratulate you on the occasion of receiving new apartments. On the other, our main goal and dream, our major concern, is to return to our homes in Abkhazia and Tskhinvali. I congratulate all of you on this day, and I would like to thank Madam Minister, the Municipal Development Fund, for finalizing this amazing project within such tight deadlines and at such high level," Irakli Garibashvili emphasized.

For years, the refugees lived in dire living conditions, in collapsing sanatoria buildings.

To provide them with housing, a modern-standard residential complex for 560 families was built. 140 apartments were handed over to IDP families in 2020, and now 420 are about to enjoy new residences.

Hundreds of refugee families were forced to live in dire conditions in Tskaltubo's sanatoria, each family in a small room of just a few square meters. After providing them with housing, however, this problem will be solved once and for all, and all sanatoria where IDPs have lived for years will be closed. The project for providing IDPs with housing, implemented with financing from the Government of Georgia, cost over 37 million GEL.

The construction of 8 residential buildings in Tskaltubo was carried out by the Municipal Development Fund of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure. A total of 560 refugee families will live in modern-standard homes, fully renovated apartments, with access roads paved, green spaces ensured, and playgrounds built. The apartments are fully adopted for the needs of persons with disabilities.
