"Systemic problems that existed in our past, especially within the law-enforcement system, when officers mandated to fight against crime committed offences themselves and then failure to charge them for the wrongdoing turned into a system malady. We were thus forced in the government to assume commitment over establishing an independent mechanism in 2014" noted Giorgi Gakharia, Prime Minister of Georgia at the Executive Government Meeting today.

As noted by the Prime Minister of Georgia, cooperation of law-enforcement units with the State Inspector's Service will serve as a foundation for gaining greater trust among the regular citizens towards police and all other units within the law-enforcement system.

"Another issue, which is essential to be noted here is the State Inspector's Service, which will start its operation today with a new function. It is an independent investigation mechanism. You may well be aware that such mechanism does not even exist in many developed countries of Europe, however systemic problems that existed in our past - especially within the law-enforcement system - when officers mandated to fight against crime committed offences themselves and then failure to charge them for wrongdoing turned into a system malady. We were thus forced in the government to assume commitment over establishing an independent mechanism in 2014. We had no problem with that of course, as the system was entirely transformed and we made this step forward. I wish to urge representatives of the law-enforcement system to fully cooperate with the State Inspector's Service so that our citizens gain greater trust towards the law-enforcement system" stated the Prime Minister of Georgia.
