Prime Minister’s Visit to Turkey

On 23-24 December 2008, the Prime Minister of Georgia was on a working visit in the Republic of Turkey.

As part of the visit, Grigol Mgaloblishvili met with Abdulah Gul, the President of the Republic of Turkey. At the meeting, the parties discussed the details of political and economic cooperation with Georgia. After the meeting with the President of Turkey, Grigol Mgaloblishvili said: "Turkey is our partner, Turkey is our number one trade partner and we have very important economic projects. Besides, we thoroughly discussed the current events of the region. I believe that the meeting with the President was very important."

The Prime Minister of Georgia visited the rehabilitation center based in Ankara where 17 Georgian militaries who have suffered in the Georgia-Russian war are undergoing a therapy course. As Grigol Mgaloblishvili stated at the meeting with the Georgian militaries, he is happy that they were afforded the opportunity to undergo treatment there. "There is all that is needed here but should further rehabilitation become necessary, we'll do all our best to help you," the Prime Minister said.

In Ankara, Grigol Mgaloblishvili met with Turkish Prime Minister Rejep Taif Erdoghan. "At the face-to-face meeting, we discussed a variety of issues in the relations between the two countries. Turkey has always stood by Georgia in hard times. It is important that Turkey stands for the territorial integrity of Georgia." According to the Prime Minister, on the visit to Turkey, he mainly discussed energy and economic cooperation matters. The parties discussed the opportunities to build a new power transmission line and develop Georgia's water resources to export electricity in future.

In addition, the Prime Minister of Georgia met with State Minister of Turkey Kurshad Tusman and took part in the Turkish-Georgian Business Forum held in TOBB.

As part of the visit, the members of the Georgian government delegations met with the members of the Turkish Government and Turkish businessmen, including the representatives of Turkish energy companies.
