"Famous Aerial Ropeway in Chiatura, which has been restored with highest standards, serves as a unique project. It was a challenge, problem, which we solved" stated Irakli Garibashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia when visiting the rehabilitated landmark of the region today.

The Head of Government of Georgia was accompanied to the site by Kakha Kuchava, Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia and Irakli Karseladze, Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia.

As the Prime Minister of Georgia noted, country commissioned a French manufacturer POMA to deliver the works.

"It is a unique project for our Chiatura and Chiaturians. Aerial Ropeway has been operational for the past 2 weeks after the rehabilitation and has already transported 20 000 visitors. It was a challenge, problem, which we solved and built a new cable car. Cost of works amounted 55 MLN GEL. I wish to once again thank Irakli Karseladze and his team for a very successful, effective performance. I also express my gratitude to H.E. Diego Colas, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France to Georgia for his active engagement in the implementation of this project, along with a French manufacturer POMA" adde4d the Prime Minister of Georgia.

Construction works of the new ropeways in Chiatura were carried out by the Municipal Development Fund (MDF) subordinated to the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia.

New ropeways were built in Chiatura with the funding allocated by the Government of Georgia and France and total cost of the project amounted over 55 MLN GEL.

Complete reconstruction was made to the cable car stations and ropes within the scope of the project. Total length of the aerial ropeway is 3428 meters and 8 gondolas of modern standards will be transporting passengers.

French manufacturer POMA delivered the revolving ropeway with gondolas with financial support of the French Government. Construction of the ropeways engaged professionals of French Tech Cable and POMA, along with a Georgian company.

Overall, 4 revolving ropeways with gondolas were built within the scope of the project for four various destinations within the city. Aerial passengers will be transported to the following directions from the center of Chiatura - Sanatorium, Naguti, Lezhubani and Mukhadze. New aerial ropeway has already been commissioned in all four directions and is rendering services to its customers.

Aerial lift was one of the main means of transport since 50's of the 20th century in the high terrain of Chiatura. It was the very first ropeway ever built in the former Soviet Union. Back in 90's ropeways and gondolas could no longer meet the demand in terms of quality and efficiency, due to the long service and created threat to its passengers. That is why the operation of the aerial ropeway was terminated in 2016.

New aerial cable car in Chiatura now has a capacity to transport about 2 000 passengers a day in a safe and comfortable manner.
