Today, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili held a meeting with a US Congress delegation led by Jeanne Shaheenand including Rob Portman, Republican Senator from Ohio.

The meeting at the Administration of the Government focused on the Georgia-US strategic partnership grounded in shared values and interests. The conversation touched on the challenges facing every area of the strategic partnership between the two countries. It was also emphasized that Georgia is ready to step up its close cooperation with the US.

The meeting paid attention to Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations and steps taken toward full EU membership and accession to NATO.

The importance of Black Sea security, and close cooperation between Georgia and the US in this direction, was singled out.

The parties, in discussing the dire situation in Georgia's occupied territories, underlined the role of US support in peaceful conflict resolution. The Senators reaffirmed bipartisan congressional support for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

The conversation also revolved around Georgia's political state of affairs. The ruling team, committed to the April 19 agreement, takes all necessary steps toward its implementation, the Prime Minister pointed out. The Senators characterized their visit as a bipartisan message of US support for empowering Georgia's democracy.

The meeting was attended by US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Georgia Kelly Degnan, Senator Shaheen'sForeign Policy Adviser Amy English, and Senator Portman'sForeign Policy Adviser Taylor Clausen, while the Georgian side was represented by Vice Prim Minister, Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani and Georgia's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the US Davit Bakradze.
