2020-05-15

The Government of Georgia made the decision not to appeal to the president and, correspondingly, the Parliament with the aim of extending the state of emergency beyond the 22nd of May on the basis of an in-depth epidemiological analysis, according to Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Gakharia.

The head of the government stressed that this decision does not mean that the imposed restrictions will be lifted instantly and in full.

"After an in-depth epidemiological analysis, the Government of Georgia decided not to apply to the president and, correspondingly, the Parliament with the aim of extending the state of emergency beyond the 22nd of May. As you know, the state of emergency was declared in Georgia on the 21st of March. It was subsequently extended on one occasion and today, we decided that the Government of Georgia will no longer appeal to the Parliament to extend the state of emergency.

Some of the restrictions, which are deemed essential by the epidemiologists in order for us to be able to retain the high level of risk management that we have today, must remain in force. To this end, we will address the Parliament to begin discussions on the legislative amendments that will allow us to manage the epidemic and epidemiological risks without declaring a state of emergency, so that we can have the opportunity to impose and enforce the restrictions recommended by epidemiologists," the head of the government stated.
