2020-03-05

"We should be rather cautious in our actions and do our best to minimize the impact of COVID-19 on our economic growth" noted Giorgi Gakharia, Prime Minister of Georgia at the Executive Government Meeting today.

As noted by the Prime Minister of Georgia, respective instructions have already been issued and Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia will hold series of meetings with industry representatives. According to the Prime Minister of Georgia, Government will do its best together with the Ministry of Finance and National Bank of Georgia to minimize its impact.

"Inter-Agency Council continues to work actively towards mitigation of COVID-19. We are considering ways to soften its impact on the economy. You may well be aware that international financial institutions (IFIs) are already assessing the impact of COVID-19 on the economic growth as being quite significant already and substantial downsizing projections are made on global economic growth. Of course, it already had a minor impact on the economy of Georgia. It was predominantly felt on sectors that are directly linked with tourism. We understand it well that this problem needs to be tackled by the Government. We will use every tool and leverage in our hands - both monetary and fiscal - towards this end" noted the Prime Minister of Georgia.

Head of Government of Georgia expressed earnest gratitude towards medical doctors, border protection guards and customs officers.

According to the Prime Minister of Georgia, some politically agitated opponents believe that virus selects its targets by political affiliation, but it is still a battle that needs to be fought by everyone together.

"World Health Organization (WHO) deems performance of the Government of Georgia at large and Ministry of Health in particular as being effective and with high standards. These are not mere words. We refer to the results of fight against COVID-19 achieved till present. Nevertheless, we should all remember that it is a global challenge. We should not relax for even a second, but further increase the effectiveness of the joint effort of fight.

Once again, I wish to underline that we are obliged to thank medical doctors, border protection guard, customs officers and we should do it regularly until we succeed in combating the challenge.

Irrespective of the fact that some politically agitated opponents believe that virus selects its targets by political affiliation and causes no danger to blues, yellows or reds only, we all understand it well that society demonstrates a high degree of civil responsibility. It is still a fight that needs to be fought by all of us to minimize its impact on the economy and our citizens" concluded the Prime Minister of Georgia.
