Lela Akiashvili has been appointed Human Rights Advisor to the Prime Minister of Georgia. The new advisor was presented by the Head of Government at today's Cabinet meeting.

"We are appointing a new Human Rights Advisor to the Prime Minister, Lela Akiashvili, who will undoubtedly step up the Administration's work in the area of human rights. In the same vein, the Human Rights Council will enhance its performance, unfortunately having been quite passive in the recent years. The Human Rights Secretariat will become more active as well. We all understand well that the key goal of our democratic development is a human being and respect for human rights, which is why I am confident that Lela Akiashvili, with her experience in both working for international organizations and fostering human rights, will be a worthy member of our team," Giorgi Gakharia emphasized.

Over the years, Lela Akiashvili has held various positions, such as Project Manager for Gender Equality, a UN/UNDP joint program, also as a researcher at various international NGOs, the Institute for Peace and Justice, Texas A&M University, and the Bush School. While having worked at the Permanent Mission of Georgia to the UN, and UNICEF's mission, Lela Akiashvili is also engaged in academic activities.
