"I bow my head before our heroes and their memory, and I am convinced that the Georgian nation will always remain committed to the ideals that united us 30 years ago," Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze stated today on Rustaveli Avenue where he paid homage to the memory of those fallen on April 9, 1989, and laid a wreath at their memorial.
"Today marks 30 years from the April 9 tragedy. Indeed, that day solidified the Georgian nation in the fight for freedom. Our entire millennia-old history is a continuous fight for freedom, one that continues even today. Thirty years ago, the Georgian nation united to stand firm and consequently bring us the restoration of our statehood. It is equally symbolic that, two years after this tragedy, we declared our country's independence," Mamuka Bakhtadze emphasized.
Thirty years have passed since the April 9 events. A peaceful demonstration in support of Georgia's independence was cracked down by Soviet army units, resulting in the deaths of numerous peaceful civilians.
