Georgia's pre-election environment, the country's democratic reforms, and Georgia-US relations were the key issues discussed during today's meeting between Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze and NDI (National Democratic Institute) President Derek Mitchell in Washington, DC.

The parties discussed the competitive environment of the election campaign and the active work of the interagency commission toward ensuring the maximal transparency of the process, as part of which political forces and representatives of the civic sector are able to engage in reviewing election-related issues.

According to the Prime Minister, the Georgian Government, which will once again ensure a free, fair, and transparent election, welcomes the active engagement of international observers in the election process.

The President of the NDI emphasized his special attitude toward Georgia and pointed out that both long-term and short-term NDI missions will monitor the election process.

Special emphasis was placed on the importance of the depersonalization of the country's political processes and Georgia's progress in developing democratic institutions. According to the Prime Minister, empowering Georgia's parliamentary democracy is the Government's top priority, and the support of friend states and international institutions in this process is of utmost importance.

The conversation also involved the importance of the Georgian Prime Minister's visit to the US. As it was underlined during the meeting, the messages brought up in relation to the development of bilateral defense, security, and economic cooperation are indicative of the high developmental level of Georgia-US relations.
