Prime Minister Comments on the Assessments of His Address to Russia Print Version

2018-03-14

Once again, I would like to comment on the most grievous fact which took place in Tskhinvali. As you know, this grievous event claimed the life of our compatriot and involved illegal detention of two persons. We urged the international community to engage in this process. I also addressed the Russian Federation with a special statement. As of today, our two compatriots have been released, and they have returned to their families, which is undoubtedly good. Unfortunately, however, the body of Tatunashvili has yet to be transported.

Over the last few days, I have encountered numerous ridiculous assessments of my statement. I would like to state unequivocally that our every step serves our country's interests, of course, and when our country needs it-when we are talking about averting serious provocations and ensuring stability in the country-we the politicians must do our best to defuse tension, even though it may take a toll on our image. Generally, I would like to say that the very unhealthy environment in the country-with the severity of statements turned into the measurement of patriotism and love of our country-is very damaging. This environment can push politicians to take steps that will bring irreparable consequences for our country. We must try, do our best, to ensure the unwavering and consistent protection of our country's interests, fulfil the mandate granted to us by our population, and to provide stable living conditions in the country. This has been and will be our primary goal, and I reiterate that we will surely take steps in this direction.

I also would like to comment on the response we received from the Russian Federation. Of course, much may be unacceptable in this response, but one thing must be pointed out: This response makes room for talks. We must do everything in our power to put in place room for talks. There is the format of the Geneva International Discussions, and we must take steps under this format to achieve progress, however small. This small progress is the source of stability in Georgia, and if there is anything our country needs in this unstable world today is the ability to live in stability. We hope that the majority of our population have an absolutely healthy take on what is happening in our country.
