EXECUTIVE GOVERNMENT MEETING HELD ON FEBRUARY 9, 2017

2017-02-09

Today's Government meeting approved the Draft Code of Environmental Assessment. Under the Association Agreement, Georgia assumed a responsibility to align its environmental legislation with the EU acquis. One of the first steps in this direction is to improve the environmental assessment system to establish proper environmental administration. To this end, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection, in cooperation with local and international experts, developed an environmental assessment code that will be referred for approval to the Parliament of Georgia in the nearest future. The code is in line with relevant EU directives and maximally matches the country's legislative framework and reality.

The Cabinet commended the Draft Agreement between the Roads Department at the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia and Kocks Consult GmbH. Under this agreement, a detailed plan for the rehabilitation of the Dzirula-Kharagauli-Moliti-Pona-Chumateeti local road (approximately 50 km), as well as relevant tender documentation and a detailed plan for land acquisition and settlement. As part of the rehabilitation of the Dzirula-Kharagauli-Moliti-Pona-Chumateeti local road (approximately 50 km), bridge crossings will be rehabilitated and reconstructed, street gutters, and other water diversion infrastructure will be build, load-bearing walls, river regulating structures, road signs, and safety barriers will be installed, ultimately improving the road's operability characteristics. Importantly, the approval of this project will not require additional state financing or new financial obligations assumed by the state.
