Tougher Environmental Damage Legislation Print Version

2017-05-25

On the decision of the Government of Georgia, a legislative package has been developed to introduce tougher environmental damage laws, the Prime Minister of Georgia stated at today's Government meeting. According to Giorgi Kvirikashvili, stricter administrative liability will be enforced for illegal mining and hunting. Relevant agencies at the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection will be authorized to enforce fines upon identifying offenses defined in a number of provisions from the Code of Administrative Offenses.

"Stricter administrative liability and penalties will be enforced for littering from a vehicle. We believe these changes to be important given our ambitions of becoming a major tourist destination, which we are. We will not accept the current littering statistics, especially on territories adjacent to highways. I have already given an instruction to local self-governments and governors to pay special attention to the issue of highway littering in their jurisdictions. This law will help us make a difference," Giorgi Kvirikashvili stated.
