Thanks to the effective fight against coronavirus in the penitentiary system, Georgia is among the successful countries praised by the Council of Europe
The Council of Europe has recently published 2 reports on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on prisons populations.
The first report-Prisons and Prisoners in Europe in Pandemic Times: An evaluation of the short-term impact of the COVID-19 on prison populations-covers a period from January 1, 2020 to April 15, 2020. The report ranks Georgia among the countries with no COVID-19 cases confirmed in their penitentiary systems. Besides Georgia, these are Iceland, Latvia, Lichtenstein, Lithuania, Malta, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and San Marino.
The second report-Prisons and Prisoners in Europe in Pandemic Times: An evaluation of the medium-term impact of the COVID-19 on prison populations-covers a period until September 15, 2020. The report ranks Georgia among stable countries, such as Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Malta, Spain, the United Kingdom, and others.
With almost 2 months having passed since the last reporting period of the Council of Europe (September 15, 2020), as a result of the complex preventive measures taken by the state since early March of 2020 to ensure against the possible penetration of the virus into penitentiaries, Georgia's penitentiary system continues its successful fight against COVID-19.
