State Security Service of Georgia Detained 5 Persons on the Fact of Illegal Selling of Uranium Print Version

As a result of jointly conducted activities, the officers of Counter-intelligence Department alongside with the Special Operations Department under SSG, detained 5 citizens of Georgia in Kobuleti on the fact of illegal selling of the radioactive substance - Uranium.

The abovementioned persons were detained as they brought the substance at an apartment in Kobuleti in an attempt to sell it. They were aiming at selling the substance for 3 million USD.

The radiology review revealed that the substance Uranium, with the total weight of 1,665 gr, contains 2 radioactive isotopes: Uranium 238 and a small amount (0, 23%) of Uranium 235 that belong to the category of nuclear substance. Due to the gamma ray emissions and the type of the source, direct and long-term exposure to the substance is hazardous for human life and health.

Investigation on the fact of illegal handling and selling of nuclear material (Article 230, part I of the Criminal Code of Georgia that envisages from 5 to 10 years of imprisonment) is in progress.
Investigation is carried out by Counter-Intelligence Main Investigative Division under the State Security Service of Georgia.
Upon Tbilisi City Court decision taken on April 27th, 2016, the detainees were sentenced to imprisonment.
