Natia Mezvrishvili and Venice Commission Secretary Thomas Markert Discuss Reform for Separation of Investigative and Prosecutorial Functions

2020-02-18

Head of the Administration of the Georgian Government Natia Mezvrishvili, as part of her working visit to Strasbourg, met today with Secretary Thomas Markert of the Venice Commission.

The meeting's primary goal was to inform Venice Commission representatives about the successes and future plans related to the reforms of Georgia's Criminal Procedure Code and the separation of investigative and prosecutorial functions.

During the meeting, Natia Mezvrishvili underlined that the reform of the Criminal Procedure Code, launched alongside the criminal police reform at the Interior Ministry, seeks to enhance the quality of investigation through separating investigative and prosecutorial functions on the legislative level. According to the Head of the Government's Administration, striking a balance in defining investigative and prosecutorial authorities with a view to ensuring the effectiveness of the criminal justice process is one of the key principles underpinning democratic governance grounded in the principle of the rule of law.

The Venice Commission issued a report on the Concept of the Reform of the Criminal Procedure Code in March of 2019.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Interior Minister Nino Tsatsiashvili.
