Importantly, the perception of equality must be translated into a practical value to be reflected in every public document or strategy we are developing together, the Prime Minister's Human Rights and Gender Equality Advisor Lela Akiashvili stated in her speech at the opening ceremony of Equality Week.

According to Akiashvili, holding the first Equality Week in Georgia is a profound statement on the part of the Council of Europe and public institutions involved in its organization.

"Equality is guaranteed by our Constitution. When discussing equality, however, it is perceives as an idealistic value, which is why it is so important to translate this perception of equality into a practical value to be reflected in every public document or strategy we are developing together. For our part, we embrace this responsibility, and our immediate task is to strengthen and better the performance of the Prime Minister's Human Rights Council so that it may serve as a guarantor and pillar of equality and respect for human rights in our country, in cooperation with both international and local organizations. When it comes to equality, one of our primary tasks is to develop and subsequently approve a new chapter of the Human Rights Action Plan, one celebrating equality of all persons. This way, we reaffirm equality and the rights to be reflected in said chapter," Lela Akiashvili emphasized.

Equality Week opened at the Museum of Modern Art. The week seeks to promote tolerance and enhance awareness about available legal mechanisms among victims of discrimination. The event was attended by local and international human rights organizations, and representatives of various public institutions and the Office of the Public Defender.
